We earlier highlighted the progress made in immunization in Ghana and the inequalities that persist. Today we look at immunization rates for specific vaccines - BCG (tuberculosis), DPT (diphtheria, pertussis/whooping cough and tetanus), polio and measles.
Significant gains in disease-specific immunization rates however more needs to be done as coverage is not at a 100%. Coverage is lowest for DPT and polio which require multiple doses, and thus a higher risk of children not completing the recommended number. BCG immunization has the highest coverage at 97% which is understandable as it requires one dosage.
A WHO press release warns of the risk of disruptions to immunization programmes due to covid-19 leading to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles. As such, it is important that provision of immunization services continue with the appropriate hygiene and social distancing protocols.
